Dumfries and Galloway is one of
Scotland’s most beautiful regions. Completely
unspoilt and mainly undiscovered, it can be easily by-passed since our main road
networks lead the traveller northwards towards the central belt and the
Highlands.
Beautiful and dramatic they undoubtedly are but those who do chance upon
Galloway
are not disappointed and are enchanted with it’s soft rolling countryside, the
hills
and glens, lochs and forests. Galloway offers the visitor the opportunity to
indulge
in many interests and activities. The quiet network of roads are ideal for the
cyclist,
whilst the walker will enjoy not only the hills but many forest walks within
Galloway
Forest Park, home to many interesting birds and wild life.
The area is steeped in history. Hightae itself is one of four villages founded
by
Robert the Bruce early in the fourteenth century to provide military support for
his
castle in nearby Lochmaben. For centuries Whithorn in Wigtownshire drew pilgrims
from all parts of the country to worship at the shrine of St Ninian, who brought
Christianity to Scotland in the fifth century.
There is much more to discover and enjoy and we look forward to welcoming you to
Garden Cottage and this very beautiful part of our world – Galloway.
